news o' the day
S i'm trying a new kind of post that i'd like to do on a fairly regular basis... we'll see how it goes. Bsically i'm just going to write about some of the headlines and stories of the day, sometimes just a quick comment. Now to start:
"Best Headline of the Day" goes to cnn for "Billy Idol Is Back for More, More, More." Heh.
"Best Picture of the Day" goes to the BBC (tecnially the AP though) for the picture accompanying the article linked to at the bottom of this post. Yes, that is the Leader of the Free World wearing a cowboy hat. Sigh. I do, however, love that Sharon has this total "wtf?" face when he's looking at Bush. Hee.
"Best (and saddest) Statistic of the Day" goes to the BBC for a statistic in an article about Sesame Street producers promoting healthy eating habits on their show. The statistic is: "Almost one in three children in the US is now overweight, as opposed to one in 25 in the UK." I... wow. Just, wow. ...We should probably start doing something about that.
"Craziest/Weirdest Article Topic" goes to CNN for their story about a shoot-out that broke out between two Florida families, who had been fueding for over a year, when the daughter from one family went on a date with the son from the other family. I kid you not. Six people were sent to the hospital. Yeah, we don't need more gun control at all, no siree, cause then we couldn't have a real-life Romeo and Juliette. An excerpt from the story: "'All this started because they were dating,' said Melva Ortiz, Miguel's mother. 'I tried to tell him to leave the girl, but you know how kids are.'" Again, wow.
The political story of choice for the day is the Senate confirmation hearings for Bush's appointed ambassador to the U.N. - John Bolton. Personally I think he sounds like quite the douchebag. It seems like it would be a good idea to appoint someone to the U.N. who likes the idea but wants to offer constructive criticism, instead of someone who says "there is no such thing as the United Nations." And I really wish I were making that up, but I am not. Link
